It doesn’t matter who you really are, graphic designer, web designer, viewer, concept developer, animator, or layout artist. If you belong to the word “Graphic design”, this is for you.
This is the time when I was in the initial stage of learning graphic design. For me it was about experimenting and playing with colors. Starting with a white canvas in Adobe Photoshop and ending with an illusion, which cannot be predicted correctly, what does it denote? But it was still a designed graphic.
I still remember that most of my great designs actually started without any concept and were conceptualized after I finished them. I used to call it quality for mistakes.
This is not the story of me alone; infecting this belongs to thousands of newcomers and at some point even professionals.
This “Lesson Book: Graphic Design” article tries to explain the most critical and important factor in designing a conceptualized and meaningful graphic for the highly demanding corporate design world.
Graphic design is no longer the art of playing with colors; It is a complete set of processes to follow.
- Understanding of the central concept
- Creating value
- To draw
- Design layout
- final touch
1) Understanding of the central concept
The core concept is actually the message, which must be delivered to the audience of your graphic. Better to call it a graph subject. So before double-clicking on the graphic editor icon, set up a central message for your future graphic. Think about what you need, that your audience knows from this graph. Then look at your concept from the customer’s point of view, are you getting what you want to show?
I think the most critical factor in designing a meaningful graph is visualizing and designing the concept. Concept, that is, how will you deliver your message to your audience? Concept, that is, what unique illusion will replace your 1000 words?
In this step, you need to visualize what your future chart looks like. You need to view the content of the graph.
Let me give an example.
I once saw an advertisement for a car manufacturing company in a magazine. In the graphic, they had placed a luxurious white sofa on four wheels. Of course, they wanted to show their customers how much comfort the car offers the driver.
This is an elegant example of getting the central concept (“Providing Comfort”) and visualizing a design (“Luxurious sofa on four wheels”).
3) Create value
Creating value means that you must visualize your design according to the value of the product or the value of the brand. What I mean is that you cannot visualize a beggar signing a check with a luxurious Parker pen OR you cannot visualize a family sitting and smiling in a Red Ferrari Racing Car.
Brands have certain values and you must design your graphic accordingly to maintain your brand value.
Most designers love to skip this step, but this is again a very important section. Designing a sketch of your visualization before drawing the actual graph is like designing a demo model of a building, before actually constructing it.
It gives you an exactly what the final graph will come up with. You can better use your time to improve the placement of the content and the appearance of the graphic on paper and you can even make the appropriate changes if something goes wrong here.
5) Design layout
Now you are 100% ready to get your hands dirty with the various tools of graphic design software to shape your imagination in real life.
The benefit of following the 4 steps above can be seen here, where you have a clear picture of what exactly you want to create and how it will ultimately look.
There is a saying in management that “it is always better to spend more time planning, rather than spending more days producing.”
Graphic designers often develop careers on their ideas, talent, and portfolios, which sometimes outweigh academic qualifications. Despite that, most of them complete their national diploma, associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a similar subject.
Employers prefer designers who are familiar with software design, but who also have the ability to work from the computer to produce ideas that appeal to employers.
A designer can work internally or as freelancers for the usual amount of office hours. Salaries may vary based on where you live or work, while more jobs and higher wages are based in larger cities, particularly London.
As a designer you can perform some or most of the following tasks:
- Know the company and the client’s products, the competition and the market.
- Develop and refine design summaries.
- Interpret objectives and solve problems through images.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders, such as creative directors, account managers, and other designers.
- Work at strategic levels with several clients.
· Manage budget and scheduling issues for multiple projects
