Creativity is important if you wish to stand out of the competition and be the best out there. Creativity means using your imagination or original ideas to create something, but we should also learn from another person’s idea. If you are wanting to be creative and thinking of some idea, do put this thought in your steps in planning – “Think Different”.
This is Apple’s quote. You can consider Apple as a synonym of Creativity. Apple is a pure example of how being creative can boost your business growth and can take you to the next level.
It’s that creativity that has helped Apple top Boston Consulting Group’s list of “ The Most Innovative Companies” for 11 years in a row, and become a brand that has become an example for all.
“Creativity is essential in business because it’s a differentiator”, says Tucker Marion, an associate professor in Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business and director of the Master of Science in Innovation program.
According to the Educational Scientist Mel Rhodes, there are four “P’s” of creativity. Two factors that you can’t control – the traits of creative Persons and the Products ( or outcome) of your creativity. Then, there are two traits you can control – the Processes you use and the Press or environment you work in.
We all are having the gift of creativity, but we just lack the knowledge on how to tap the start button of creativity. Here are some tips that can help you in being productive and creative in your business and the tips will also help you achieve one or the other “P’s”:
- Psychological distance:
Has any idea ever occurred to you while you are listening to songs, taking a shower, or any other activity? In a 2014 study conducted by Kaufman, 72% of the respondents around the world reported having some kind of new insight in the shower.
According to psychological professor Lile Jia, our minds are more likely to think creatively about things we aren’t experiencing right here, right now, without stress.
So, for creativity, you need to be more removed from the problem, so your mind can relax and work creatively. If you are facing a problem and you are not able to find a solution, try distancing yourself from the problem and do relaxing stuff. To solve a problem it is the best way that you should move away from the problem instead of sitting over it.
Another way is to change your project scheduling and switching to another task. Anytime you distance yourself from the project, you increase the chances of coming back with a more objective and clear view.
- Put Constraints on yourself:
Creativity is when more is made/achieved from less.
Imagine you have purchased a new plot and now you have to give a contract to a contractor. You have not given any budget or ideas about what you want .i.e. you have not given him the project scope. They will make the house with all the ideas they have and with the budget that they seem fit. Now, if you would have given them a budget and an overview of what you want, there were higher chances that the design they produce now would be more creative and with greater ideas.
If we have abundant resources we will not think creatively and would use all the resources to do the project, but if we have a certain number of resources only, that’s when our creative side would come out.
- Work over your Neurochemical Balance:
Creativity is friends with right Neurochemical balance.
Imagine working at your 100% when you are ill, you just can’t. That’s the same case with your brain. If you are stressing, it causes problems like higher blood pressure that detract from your brain’s overall ability to relax and focus.
Adopt some healthy habits like doing yoga, exercising and eating healthy food.
Serotonin has a creativity-enhancing effect over our body. The highest serotonin levels are mostly seen in the morning, for most of the people. When you feel confident, inspired and energetic, your serotonin is at its peak. Most people have high serotonin levels in the morning, this may differ from person to person. Maximize these hours by taking healthy food and exercising.
- Use Tools to note down your thoughts:
As I have stated earlier that you can get ideas when you are not working. So what if you get an idea while you are on a go, you have to note it down or there are chances that you may forget the idea.
This is where various tools can come in handy to note all your ideas. You can carry a pocket notebook with you if you like to or you can simply use apps to note down your thoughts. Tools like notepad or you can also use various Communication Tools to instantly share the ideas with your team.
- Save Important Tasks for Flow Hours:
We all have a time of the day where we are most productive and creative.
For most people, they are most productive in the morning .i.e 9 AM to 12 PM. But it’s not true for everyone. The peak hour differs from person to person and according to their lifestyle too.
Research on ultradian rhythms indicates that most people run in productivity cycles of 90 to 120 minutes that themselves happen throughout the 24-hour day. Almost no one can focus well for longer than 120 minutes as we do need a break after all.
Figure out yours and do all the hard work or try to solve problems in that duration.
Creativity is a product of risk and trusting your intuitions. Just trust your gut feeling and then you will discover amazing results.
